Hi Everyone,
One set of exams down, one to go! 3-509 has been working hard, and is ready to take the State Math Exams next Tuesday through Thursday (May 2-4th). As we prepared for the ELA, please encourage the kids to get to bed at a good hour, eat a great breakfast, and arrive with enough time so sprinting up to the 5th floor is not needed. We will start each day at 9:00 am.
I AM SO PROUD of the work our kids have been doing. Their grit and resilience is truly inspiring, and and students are truly giving 100% in their marathon training. They are showing that they are calm, prepared, and confident, and I can't thank you enough for reinforcing this mentality at home. Let's do it one more time!
NEWS/EVENTS
- The Spring Gala Fundraiser is coming up on Monday May 15th at the Hudson Terrace.
- Family Friday will take place this Friday April 28nd. Students attending track that are missing will have access to information on our class blog. Our theme is creating plans for students Showcase work.
- The Math State exams are next week, Tuesday May 2nd to Thursday May 4th.
- Fidget spinners are banned! Thanks for your support with this...they are a tremendous distraction.
CURRICULUM
Reading: Last week we launched our next reading unit- Research Clubs! We are thrilled to dive back into nonfiction. In their unit students will work in groups to learn about different animals. In bend one of the unit, students learn about when type, they study a second in the 2nd bend, and do comparison work in the 3rd bend. This week we working on research plans in clubs, determining ways to jot information, and synthesizing information across texts.
Writing: Our writing unit is a sister unit to our Research Clubs- Informational Writing in a Content Area. Students will be using all they know about informational writing to create books first with their clubs in bend one, and then independently with a different animal in bend two. Students will revisit crafting a table of contents, elaborating within a subtopic, and creating strong introductions and conclusions about their topics.
Math: We are taking the fraction post assessment on Wednesday 4/26. We are finishing up our marathon training to prepare for this week's exams. After the tests we are launching our Data and Graphing Unit.
To wrap up our marathon training we are spending our time this week revisiting multistep word problems and sample extended response questions. I have attached a helpful rubric below to show how the kids should be crafting their responses.
